Power door locks have become a great luxury these days and when they don’t work, it is quite the pain. It doesn’t have to be this way. Diagnosing and fixing a door lock failure issue can be a pretty simple repair the majority of the time.

Before you begin this repair, you will first want to make sure you properly diagnose what is going on. Is it just one door that doesn’t work? Is it only the key fob? Once you know these answers, find the section below that corresponds to your issue.

All Doors/Multiple Doors Fail to Lock/Unlock

When you have multiple doors failing to lock/unlock, you are probably facing either a blown fuse or a larger electrical issue. Start with the easy culprit, the fuse. Looking at your owner’s manual or the fuse box, you should find a fuse related to the door locks. Pulling this fuse out and replace it with the same exact one.

If changing the fuse doesn’t work, then unfortunately, you probably have a larger electrical issue. In this case, the wisest course of action is to bring it to your local Toyota mechanic to have it looked at. The electrical system is complex and diagnosing it yourself can be a nightmare.

One Door Fails to Lock/Unlock

If you only have one door causing the issue, you most likely have a bad actuator. The actuator is the motor which powers the door lock system in the door. Over time, this motor will give out through normal wear and tear.

In order to fix this problem, you will need to take apart the door, find the door locking system and replace the motor. Here’s how:

1. First, find the replacement part by visiting your local Toyota dealer or online at parts.olathetoyota.com.
2. Next, since we will be working with an electrical system, it is best to disconnect the negative power supply on the battery.
3. Looking at the door panel, find and locate all the screws holding it on. You will find several screws in the places like the door handle and along the bottom of the door.
4. After all the screws are removed, carefully peel back the door panel. You will/should hear a clicking sound as the plastic clips release the door panel.
5. With the door panel carefully pulled away from the door, you will have an electrical cord connecting the interior door lock system to the door lock switch. Unhook this cord.
6. Most doors have a plastic shroud protecting the interior components. Carefully peel back this shroud.
7. Looking over the interior components, you should see a metal rod running down and into an electrical motor. This is the actuator. Match up this actuator with your new one and swap them out.
8. With the new actuator installed, replace the door panel by reversing these instructions.

After reconnecting the power, the door should be working properly. If it still doesn’t work, double check your connections. If that doesn’t help, you may have a larger problem.

Remote Key Fob Fails

If the remote key fob doesn’t work any longer, it is likely a dead battery. The battery is accessed by squeezing on both of the long sides of the fob. You will see a crease around the key fob where it opens. After squeezing, this crease will grown and the key fob will pop open. On the inside is a small battery.
